Create a server

Every option in the create-server form, explained.

Region

Choose where your server runs. Every region uses NVMe storage and offers the same plans and prices.

RegionCode (API / CLI)
US East (default)us-east
EU Centraleu-central
US Westus-west

Each server gets a hostname in its region, for example vm-ab12cd34.us-east.kasadavps.net.

Image

Pick the operating system to install:

ImageSlug (API / CLI)
Ubuntu 24.04 LTSubuntu-24.04
Debian 12debian-12
Rocky Linux 9rocky-9
AlmaLinux 9almalinux-9

Plan

Shared vCPU plans (K) share CPU time with neighbors and suit websites, APIs and most apps. Dedicated vCPU plans (D) reserve whole CPU threads for you — best for steady heavy work such as builds, databases or video.

PlanvCPURAMNVMeTransferMonthlyHourly
K11 shared2 GB40 GB2 TB$10.00$0.015
K22 shared4 GB80 GB4 TB$19.00$0.028
K44 shared8 GB160 GB6 TB$36.00$0.054
K88 shared16 GB320 GB8 TB$69.00$0.103
D22 dedicated8 GB120 GB4 TB$49.00$0.073
D44 dedicated16 GB240 GB6 TB$95.00$0.141

Each server includes one IPv4 address and an IPv6 range. You pay by the hour, and a server's charge for a month never goes above its monthly price.

New accounts can run 2 servers on plans up to K2 for their first 30 days.

Custom sizes

If no plan fits, choose Custom size in the Size step and set exactly the vCPU, memory and disk you need. The price is the sum of its parts:

PartMonthly priceRange
Shared vCPU$2.00 per vCPU1–16 vCPU, at least 1 GB memory per vCPU
Dedicated vCPU$10.00 per vCPU1–16 vCPU, at least 2 GB memory per vCPU
Memory$2.75 per GB1–64 GB, whole GB
NVMe disk$0.05 per GB20–1,000 GB, in 10 GB steps

For example, 2 shared vCPU, 4 GB and 80 GB costs $19.00 a month; 4 dedicated vCPU, 16 GB and 240 GB costs $96.00. The hourly price is the monthly price divided by 730, and the month is capped at the monthly price, just like plans. Traffic is included: half your memory in TB plus 2 TB (at least 2 TB, up to 20 TB).

Custom servers can be resized later to a bigger custom size or plan of the same CPU type. During their first 30 days, new accounts can create shared custom sizes up to 2 vCPU and 4 GB. Current prices are always on the pricing page.

From the API, send "custom": {"kind": "shared", "vcpu": 3, "ram_gb": 6, "disk_gb": 100} instead of plan; POST /v1/quote/custom returns the price first. With the CLI, use --vcpu 3 --ram 6 --disk 100 (add --dedicated for dedicated vCPU) instead of --plan.

SSH keys

Tick one or more keys from your account. They are installed for the root user (or the image's default user). See SSH keys.

Optional settings

  • User data (cloud-init) — a script or config that runs on first boot. See Cloud-init.
  • Backups — automatic weekly backups for +20% of the plan price.
  • IPv6 only — skip the IPv4 address and save $1.50 a month.
  • Firewall — attach a firewall you've made. See Firewalls.
  • Private network — connect the server to one of your private networks.
  • Name — letters, numbers and dashes, for example web-1.

What happens next

The console shows each step as your server is built: reserving capacity, assigning addresses, installing the image, applying your settings and starting it. If any step fails we undo the rest automatically and you are not charged. Billing starts only when the server is running.

After it's running

  • Power: start, shut down (graceful), stop (hard), reboot and reset.
  • Console: a browser-based screen and keyboard for when SSH isn't available.
  • Rebuild: reinstall with a fresh image (erases the disk).
  • Resize: move to a bigger plan of the same kind; the disk grows too. Resizing down isn't possible.
  • Reverse DNS: set the name your IP address resolves back to.
  • Delete: type the server's name to confirm. Charges stop immediately and the disk is wiped.

Stopped servers still cost money

A stopped server keeps its disk and IP address reserved, so it is still billed. Delete it (after a snapshot, if you like) to stop charges.
